The Breakup

It had been roughly two months since Sonic had returned to Mobius, and he and Sally had become closer than ever. They now came into each other’s rooms freely, but Sonic, out of courtesy, still knocked and waited for Sally to let him in.
One morning, Sonic walked down to Sally’s room. He knocked on the door, and a few seconds later, Sally opened the door, saw Sonic, and hugged him. Sonic kissed her and smiled. “Morning, Sally.” Mira suddenly walked into the hall, rubbed against Sonic’s ankle, and looked up at him curiously. Sonic looked down at the kitten and chuckled, “Morning, Mira.” Mira twitched her nose and replied, “Morning, lightning.” Sonic raised an eyebrow. “‘lightning’? That’s a new one.” Sally giggled and said, “Talking to the cat with that implant again?” While he was lost in space, Sonic had received an alien implant in his ear, and it enabled him to understand the speech of any living thing. Mira looked up at Sonic with mock irritation. “Do me a favor, and ask her just what is wrong with talking to a cat.” Sonic repeated to Sally what Mira had said. Sally bent down and picked Mira up. She smiled at the little kitten and said, “There’s nothing wrong with it at all. I was only joking, Mira.” Mira nuzzled against Sally’s cheek in acknowledgement.

For most of the day, Sonic and Sally spent their time in the living room, resting in each other’s arms. The rest of the week also passed by peacefully. Then, over the weekend, Sally’s parents called her to the throne chamber several times to discuss what King Max called ‘urgent affairs’. The next week, Sonic and Sally were walking through the garden. Sonic casually asked her, “Sal, what was it that your parents were talking to you about?” Sally looked at him strangely. “Why does it matter to you?” Sonic replied quietly, “Well… every time you left the throne room, you… well… you had this funny look on your face… like… like something was wrong, and I was just wondering what was going on… I was… worried… that… something bad… happened…” He trailed off at the look on Sally’s face. Then Sally smiled at him and kissed his cheek. “Aw, sweetie, it’s alright. I really appreciate you being concerned about me. About those conversations, well… this might sound a bit… surprising to you.” “What is it?” Sonic asked. Sally had a distant look in her eyes. “Sonic, my… my parents are going on a diplomatic tour next week… They’ll be traveling around Mobius for about a month. And… …they’ve decided to have me manage the operations of the Kingdom until they return.” “Huh?” Sonic said in confusion. Sally looked him squarely in the eye. “Sonic, my parents are leaving me in charge of the Kingdom while they’re gone.” “Whoa—you’re going to be the ruler of Mobius while they’re gone?!” Sonic exclaimed. Sally nodded. Sonic rubbed the side of his head. “Man, sounds like you’ve got a big job to handle. How are you going to manage it all?” Sally looked down and said, “Umm… actually, I’ll tell you the answer tonight. That’s when Mom and Dad are going to announce the trip to everyone in New Mobotropolis.”

That night, King Maximillian and Queen Alicia announced their trip to the whole city. After the announcement had been made, Sally and Sonic walked up to the platform, where they were relatively isolated from the crowd. Sonic turned to Sally and said, “So… how are you going to rule Mobius for a whole month?” Sally looked over at her parents. They were in an embrace. Sally smiled. “I’m not ruling, Sonic.” She watched her parents walking back to the palace as she explained, “Even though my parents are still the official monarchs of the kingdom, I’ll be overseeing the daily operations of the city. They’ve given me a tremendous responsibility, and it’s going to be a big mantle to bear.” She looked down and smiled again. “That’s why I want you to rule by my side while they’re away.” Sonic took a step back. He was shocked. “Me?!” Sally wasn’t too pleased with his reaction. She turned at said to him with very slight exasperation, “Well, you are my consort, after all…” “I know Sal, but we’re in the middle of a war!” Sonic stammered, “If I don’t help fight Eggman, who will?” Sally could not believe what Sonic was saying. “There are many who are willing to stand against him!” she exclaimed, “It doesn’t have to be you, Sonic!!” People began to turn and look at the couple on the platform as Sally continued, “You can’t go risking your life in battle if we’re going to have a real future together!” Sonic was wide-eyed with disbelief. Sally’s expression softened. She walked over and caressed Sonic’s face gently. “I don’t want you to do it anymore. Stay with me. Please, my love… say you will…” A tear fell from Sonic’s eye. He slowly took her hands off his face. “I’m sorry, Sal…” he whispered, “I… can’t.”
Sally was shocked, hurt, offended, and infuriated. Her eyes narrowed as they welled up with tears. Suddenly, she lashed out and slapped Sonic. “I never would’ve believed that you’d be so selfish!!” she shrieked. Sonic staggered back a few paces. He touched the side of his face lightly. Then, more out of confusion than anger, he shouted at Sally, “WHAT is your problem?! There was no call for THAT!!” Sally shot back angrily, “I have a PROBLEM?! I’M not the one who’s so obsessed with adventuring all the time that I’m blowing off the person I love!!” Sonic blinked in shock. “What?! I’m NOT obsessed with adventuring! And how can you accuse me of ‘blowing you off’?!” Sally walked up to him, looked him in the eye, and said angrily, “Well, if that’s not the case, Sonic, then why won’t you grant me this one request? Come on, tell me what it is!” “It’s… because… I… I-I… it’s… I… …I…” Under all the stress that he was, Sonic choked on his words. Sally turned away from him. “That’s what I thought.”  She then stormed off, and Sonic shouted, “Sally! Wait!” Sally turned. Her expression radiated disgust and grief. “No, Sonic. It’s over. You’ve shown me where your real interests are. And they’re obviously not in making a commitment.” Amy Rose slowly climbed up. “Then… that means… that Sonic… is single!” Sally was enraged and heartbroken. She ran off sobbing, “Good! Then he can have you all to himself!!” Sonic stared after her. Tears were rolling down his face. Amy Rose slipped her hand into the crook of his arm. “Don’t worry, Sonic. I’ll be a better partner for you than that snob.” Sonic recoiled from Amy, and in anger, he shoved her away. “SHUTTUP AND LEAVE ME ALONE, AMY!!” He fled the courtyard in tears of grief and frustration.

Sonic went to the hillside in the meadow. He looked up at the full moon and whispered, “Sally…” He stared at the moon for a moment, and then he broke down weeping. “It’s over… it’s all over.”

END OF CHAPTER
Well, here it is! My first fanfiction story for the Sonic the Hedgehog Comic (the series by Archie Comics)! Here's how it works: My fanfictions all form a storyline that begins with this story. 'The Breakup' is the first chapter, and it hypothetically 'replaces' the comic issue titled "So Long, Sally..." (the one in which Sonic and Sally break up after an argument over whether Sonic should rule with Sally while her parents are away, or if he should continue to help out on the battlefield, fighting Dr. Eggman's empire). This story takes place two months after Sonic returns from a year-long ordeal of being lost in space. So, without further ado, here's my first story: The Breakup.

PS: Whoever it was @ Archie that suggested having Sonic and Sally break up ought to be dragged into a dark alley and pounded into next year, if you ask me...!!
